What our Families Say

When we welcome a new resident to Banksia Care, we also extend that welcome to their families and friends. We have been fortunate at Banksia to have met so many wonderful families who have entrusted us with the care of their loved one. We know that passing the full-time care of a close family member, loved one or friend over to virtual strangers is an emotional and tough time, but also one that we hope will prove both comforting and inclusive.

If that choice is now in your hands, here is what some of our families and residents have had to say….

{

“Our family had our hearts broken when we learned the path my Mum would be taking when she was diagnosed with a rare neurological disease called progressive supranuclear palsy. It was progressive, but rapid and now Mum is virtually non-communicative and requires our care 24/7. My Dad is now 68 and my sister was recently offered a fabulous new position in Dubai that we insisted she take. This left myself to make the tough decision I knew my Dad couldn’t. Seek permanent residential care for Mum. Somewhere that would know what to do if she choked on her food, wouldn’t panic and would have the strength and facilities to shower her properly and make sure she was safe in bed when sleeping. My Dad simply didn’t have the physical or emotional capacity to keep managing these ‘once simple’ tasks. I am a single Mum with three teenage children and sadly, just don’t have the time to support both families. Mum is now in Banksia Care, and I see her weekly, Dad every day. It was hard at first and we all felt so incredibly guilty, but I know it is the best for Mum and the counsellors at Banksia have helped us adjust and come to terms with this new reality.”

“My son Jakob was born at 27 weeks and sadly was diagnosed with a serious neurodevelopmental disability, including major cognitive deficits and motor disability. When Jakob turned 20, I finally had to admit I was no longer coping. Jakob’s behaviour had become quite agitated and sometimes aggressive. Trying to maintain his medication requirements was virtually impossible. I was increasingly having difficulty lifting him, even with aids, and although we had been receiving in home care, I needed to accept this was simply no longer enough. Banksia Care were amazing. From my initial enquiries to completing the paperwork and deciding to move Jakob into full time care, they were incredibly supportive, compassionate and caring. On the day I left Jakob at Banksia Care, I cried and cried. I felt like I had failed as a Mum, and I was deserting Jakob. Deb was my rock. She comforted me that day, made sure I got home safe, and checked in on me by phone and when I went to see Jakob. 4 years on, that guilt is gone. The heartache of my gorgeous son who has faced this battle all his life is still there, but I know he is in the best possible hands at Banksia, and I can see in his eyes he is happy, and he is ok. Best of all, he is safe, loved and being cared for by the best possible people.
